FatLand: The Early Days – 24

“This is getting fun,” Angela said the next day. “Intrigue and such.” She was directing the preparation of some huge pumpkin pies with vanilla brandy  and whipped cream, the whipped cream to be left unsweetened. “Intrigue and such.”

“And are we supposed to pretend that we don’t know about Stark when she gets here?”

“I wonder if she knows that Stark is funding so much of our infrastructure,” Angela said.

“I don’t think she cares at this point,”Charla said. “I think she just wants to get away from him.”

“And that’s exactly what he doesn’t want to let her do,” Angela said, then snorted, “just like a man. Wants to have his cake and eat it too.”

“Or pie,” Charla said, watching as the pies went into the oven.

“I’m making apple dumplings, too,” Angela said.

“You are a princess,” Charla said. “Goddess of the kitchen and hearth. I am rubbing you up for some apple dumplings.”

“Not necessary,” Angela said. “There will be loads. Hey, are you and Bill going to get you-know-what one of these days?”

“Maybe,” Charla said. “He’s supporting an ex, you know.”

“No!” Angela exclaimed.  “Really. What is she like?”

“Not nice,” Charla said. “But that’s to be expected.  I mean, that he would say that.”

“Will she come here?”

“I doubt it. He sends the check. That’s all she cares about, supposedly.”

“Were there kids?”

“One, but it died.”

“Oh, that’s sad.”

Charla watched as the four cooks began preparing the apple dumplings. “I am perfectly happy without ever seeing her.”

“Sure,” Angela  said.  She tasted a slice of cut apple. “Nice and tart,” she said. “Just right for dumplings. That’s the thing about food. It doesn’t talk back. It just morphs into wonderful things to eat.”

“Much more manageable than men,” Charla agreed. “But one can’t sleep with it. At least not that way.”

“No,” Angela said, and kept watching the dough take shape for the dumplings.
